Guided Walk in Copenhagen – Start of the 10-Mile Day!

It was a beautiful morning for a walk with friends! We met our local guide and strolled along the beautiful harborfront promenade. Stopping to admire the modern opera theater across the water, he described a number of eco- and people-friendly measures taken by the government. The public walkway along the water, as well as the theater are recent additions to the area. Just visible to the right and behind the opera theater, a large incinerator burns household waste and captures carbon for energy.

Moving on, we entered the courtyard at Amalienborg Palace. Queen Margrethe II lives in the palace. Other buildings on the palace square include the mansion of Crown Prince Frederik and his family and the royal guesthouse. An equestrian statue of King Frederik V lies in the center of the huge square.

Next, we passed through lively Kongens Nytorv square and stopped for a short break at Amagertorv square, by the stork fountain. Recalling our orientation walk the previous day, we were beginning to get our bearings in this large and walkable city.

Finally, we stopped outside Christiansborg Palace. The imposing structure is no longer home to the royals. Parliament meets here, and many royal functions are held at the palace.

At the end of the walking tour, Gary and I stopped in the nearby garden at Copenhagen's Royal Library. The National Library of Denmark and the University of Copenhagen's Library are also housed here.

In this peaceful setting, we planned the remainder of our day. First, we would explore colorful Christiania; then – off to playful Tivoli. So much to see and do! No wonder it was a 10-mile day!
